...and every single one of them is crap. And they took me a total of two hours. *ugh* Maybe I wrote too much over the last few days, and this is my 'punishment'.
Terry Brooks was asked by someone if he had bad writing days, and he said all the writing is good. When you go back and read it, you can't say "this was a good day. This paragraph was a bad day."
It sounds like your brain needs some stimulation and rest so you can come back tomorrow fresh and ready. :)
Hey, it happens. I'm actually planning on making a post sometime in the next few weeks about "cycles," which I'm starting to really recognize that I have. My wife actually came up with the idea, because she's been realizing that she has them herself. Talking to other people, and thinking back to comments that others have made, I'm really starting to believe that it's a possibility that everyone might have them. Some days are good, others aren't. Be glad that you got through a bad day with at least 500 words down -- and for that matter, even if they are crap, they're still better than nothing. Some of my favorite scenes from my writing started out in a pretty crappy state, and then with a round or two of editing (in the days following the initial writing) they turned into really powerful scenes. Maybe the fact that they were come-from-behind in that way is why they are my favorite? Who knows. But here's hoping that this "crappy" scene turns into one of your favorites in the next few weeks or months. Don't sweat the little setbacks!
Instead of deleting, I cut and paste them into a separate document. It makes the 'deleting' easier (I don't feel like I'm obliterating all that hard work) and on those occasions when I change my mind and decide that version 1.0 is actually better than version 2.0, I can just paste them back in instead of trying to recreate them.
I do that too, now! After getting rid of version 1.0 of that first novel I tried to write... (I *did* find the deleted section eventually, but it was a horrible day when I thought it had gone forever!) For this YA, I've got a separate document - imaginatively entitled 'clipboard' ;) - but it's only got about 300 words on it at the moment. I'm trying not to cut until the second draft.
